Curriculum Building

Pinch pots, hand-built, slab, coil, and clay weaving techniques.

    1. Pinch Pot Monsters: Elementary-High School
    a. Start with 1 lb. of clay split into 2 balls.

    b. Pinch pot both balls of clay into 2 small bowls that are the same size, opening of the bowls should be the same size.

    c. Slip and Score the 2 openings of the bowls

    d. Attach both openings of the bowls, blend the seam all the way around by pushing clay up and down over the seam.

    e. You should now have 1 sphere.

    f. Have students add:
    i. Eyes
    ii. Fangs
    iii. Mouth
    iv. Teeth
    v. Horns
    vi. Ears
    vii. Arms
    viii. Feet
    ix. Tails

    g. If the sphere is whole still, student must put a small hole to allow for air to escape.

    h. Finish with Underglaze

    i. Bisque Fire

    j. Clear Coat

    k. Glaze Fire

    l. ****For more advanced students make them more realistic****


    2. Organic Pinch Pots
    a. Start with 1 lb. ball of clay split into 2 balls.

    b. Pinch both balls of clay into, 2 small bowls that are the same size and shape, opening of the bowls should be the same size.
    c. Slip and Score the 2 openings of the bowls

    d. Attach both openings of the bowls, blend the seam all the way around by pushing clay up and down over the seam.

    e. You should now have 1 sphere.

    f. Students should use fingers to make grooves in the clay going all the way around the sphere.

    g. Students should continue until entire sphere is covered in highs and lows.

    i. For more advanced student you can:
    1. Add sgraffito into the highs and lows.
    2. Add spikes or texture to the highs.
    3. Add feet.

    3. Hand-built Faces: Elementary- High School
    a. More advanced students should work to be more realistic in their proportions or you can make it more abstract based on what you are trying to achieve.

    4. Pinch Pot Cup with Handle: Elementary-High School (Less advanced)

    5. Pinch Pot Bowl: Elementary-High School (Less advanced)

    6. Pinch Pot Animals: Like Pinch Pot Monsters

    7. Slab Leaf Dish: Elementary-Junior High (Beginner)

    8. Coil Pot: Junior High to High school

    9. Clay Weaving: Junior High to High School
